The garden
My front garden is an integral part of the Black Canyon railroad and vice versa. The railroad runs below a steep south facing bank which is divided into three zones. The lowest zone is planted to scale with the railroad. Trains pass rock walls, which are topped with miniature trees, ground covers and sedums. Various structures and dioramas are located close to the railroad. At one end of the bank, trains pass through a deep canyon. From the canyon trains emerge into red rock city where small trees grow between buildings. Before the canyon, trains pass a large waterfall.
The middle tier of the south facing bank is devoted to a variety of colorful plants and intervening shrubs. The third tier at the top of the bank is devoted to screening trees and larger shrubs. The garden brings me as much joy as the railroad. Without the backdrop of a wide variety of plants, the railroad would be barren. Without the railroad, the garden would not be as intriguing. This is, of course, why we call our hobby garden railroading.
